About the 49th
festival poster artist: Maria Reyes-Jones
One step into Maria Reyes-Jones’ gallery in Winter Park, and festival organizers knew
they found the perfect artist for the 49th annual show poster. She is well known for her
bright, bold Palm Tree series, a dramatically rendered collection depicting Florida’s most
famous foliage. For this year’s poster art, Reyes-Jones created a painting especially for
the festival – an incredible Cabbage Palm. The tree itself stands in Central Park.
Maria Reyes-Jones is a storyteller who uses paint, canvas and brushes to create a visual
world uniquely her own. This celebrated Central Florida artist has made a career out of
following her creative instincts. She tells a story that is personal yet accessible to a large
audience. She achieves this through the use of minimal compositions and vibrant color.
Recently, Reyes-Jones began incorporating materials and textures into her compositions,
adding another layer of meaning to her paintings. She explains: “I have always been
drawn to art that conveys a lot of emotion – Van Gogh, Edward Hopper and Alice Neal,
to name a few. Lately, I have been inspired by folk art, art made by people with no
formal training at all, just trying to portray their world in their own voice.”
She adds: “I am also interested in the idea of infusing my art with personal history, and so
I am drawn to the craft of quilt making; every piece of cloth has a story to tell. Layers of
meaning are added, and the end result has a richness that I respond to and want to express
in my art.”
Reyes-Jones grew up in a military family, traveling to different parts of the country at a
young age. Her high school years were spent living just outside of Washington, D.C.
where she was exposed to the world of art through her frequent visits to the Corcoran
Museum. Even as a young girl, Reyes-Jones knew her life-long passion was art. She
studied Fine Art at Florida State University, earning a B.F.A. in 1987 and an M.F.A. in
1989. Since that time, she has made her home and career in the Sunshine State.
Maria can be reached via her website, www.mariareyesjones.com, or at her gallery
located at 1562 W. Fairbanks Ave. in Winter Park.
